Special Educational Needs and Able Children |
St Michael’s aims to identify, provide for and monitor the progress of children with special educational needs as early as possible and ensure that appropriate provision is made to meet their needs. Some children need specific, extra support for their learning. Detailed information of procedures and copies of our Special Educational Needs Policy are available from the office. This policy was reviewed in June 2008.
The SEN Process
After discussions with the class teacher, parents, Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and the child (if appropriate), an Action Plan, known as an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up. This sets out the child’s chief needs, establishes targets, and identifies any extra support to be provided. The IEP is reviewed regularly, and progress is carefully monitored.
Able, gifted & talented children
We are determined to ensure that all children are suitably challenged – this includes able, gifted and talented children. In academic subjects we plan carefully to ensure that work is differentiated suitably, both for the less and the more able. Children are generally grouped by ability in literacy and maths, and there is an upper set for maths from Year 3 onwards.
We encourage children with particular talents and skills in other areas – such as sport, or music – through extra-curricular activities and the provision of additional opportunities and competitions. We have an ‘Able Child’ register, which parents are invited to contribute to. There are a number of supplementary activities throughout the year aimed at these particular children. For a copy of our ‘able child’ policy, please visit the website or contact the school office.
